Welcome to Sunderland Recovery College. We wish you a wonderful life.
Hi my Name is Dan and I work as a Peer Supporter for CNTW, and I run the depression awareness workshop and the anxiety awareness workshop at Sunderland Recovery College.
I have lived with depression and anxiety for over 25 years, and I have spent several years studying mental health, and how our thoughts and emotions can affect our daily living.
These single 2 hour workshops are designed to give you a brief insight into depression and anxiety, and help you understand how our feelings can affect us.
Hopefully through these workshops you will find courses on offer at the college that may aid you in your own recovery.
It is important to remember that anxiety is something which we all experience from time to time. It is a normal response to situations that we see as threatening to us. For example if we had go into hospital for an operation, or had to sit a driving test, or take an exam it would be natural to feel anxious. Anxiety at certain levels can be helpful in some situations such as when we need to perform well, or cope with an emergency.
You could try a simple breathing technique called Seven - Eleven Breathing. Here's what you do:
Sit in an upright position with your feet flat on the floor, keep your back straight, your shoulders pushed back and place your hands on your knees. Take a deep breath in through your nose and count to seven, then breathe out through your mouth whilst counting to eleven. Repeat this three times. This will help lower your heart rate and get oxygen into your blood, and may help lower the anxious feelings, and give us time to challenge our negative thoughts. This can be repeated as many times as you feel necessary.
Here is another Dan to take you through it:
We can all feel depressed at times, and depression is a very common problem. It can happen because of having lots of worries. Worries such as money, housing, relationships or when someone close to you dies. Sometimes having worries like these can get in the way of your daily life, however in time these feelings may pass and you will feel OK. Sometimes though it may be hard to do this without help.
