Welcome to Sunderland Recovery College. We wish you a wonderful life.
Prayer is often thought of as putting two hands together an repeating a certain script such as The Lord's Prayer. Whilst prayer can involve doing this, it can also mean other things too. And it is even possible to pray without believing in a God at all. Why not check out our video below to see Sagara interview Jon Goode about Prayer and see if it resonates with you:
First decide who you are going to pray to. This doesn't have to be the Christian God, though ot might well be. It could be a God of another religion, a pagan god.... or it might just be to the 'universe' or a 'better part of you', or your 'higher self'.
It is important that what you choose feels right for you. You can always change this later if you want. Don't worry about it too much right now. Follow your intuition.
If you decide to meditate in the context of a religion, you might want to use a script. For example, in the video Jon mentioned 'The Lord's Prayer' which is often used in the Christian Tradition. But equally there are scripts from other traditions, and scripts from 'no-traditions' that can be used.
Or you might decide that you just want to 'have a conversation', to 'get things off your mind', or 'ask for help', or whatever feels right.
It is really important to be somewhere you can be alone and undisturbed. Set some time aside for this and let people know you want some undisturbed time. You might even decide you want to go to a special place, maybe a church, or somewhere you find beautiful and uplifting.
Or maybe you want to create a special place in your home. You could use candles and pictures and flowers to create a space that feels perfect for praying.
You can now begin to recite your prayer, or start your connversation. You can do this out loud or in your head.
Try not to expect anything radical to happen. Simply give it a go. You can't get this wrong. You are just trying it to see.
When you have finished, try to come out of the session in a calm and respectful way. this will help you to integrate the prayer session into the rest of your life.
Notice if anything feels different in your experience having said your prayer.
There are many, many prayers that you could use - religious and non-religious. We've included a few here to help, but a simple Google search would give you access to many more.
Our Father, who art in heaven,
hallowed be thy Name,
thy kingdom come,
thy will be done,
on earth as it is in heaven.
Give us this day our daily bread.
And forgive us our trespasses,
as we forgive those
who trespass against us.
And lead us not into temptation,
but deliver us from evil.
For thine is the kingdom,
and the power, and the glory,
for ever and ever. Amen. The Lords Prayer
Let me be at peace,
and from that perfect place of love and acceptance,
choose to do those things
that provide the maximum benefit to all.
"May all beings be safe
May all beings be healthy
May all beings be happy
May all beings be at ease"
